Strong Foundations, Secure Future: What Budget 2025 Means for Britain

Rachel Reeves has unveiled the UK government’s new fiscal plan, Strong Foundations, Secure Future, designed to stabilise the country’s finances, reduce borrowing, and ease the cost of living for households. The plan aims to tackle long-standing economic pressures, support public services, and lay the groundwork for future growth.
A central goal of the plan is to ease pressure on household budgets and boost real incomes. Measures include a freeze on regulated rail fares and prescription charges for one year, extended fuel duty relief, and an increase in the National Living Wage to £12.71 per hour starting in April 2026.
To strengthen public services, the Budget provides funding to reduce NHS waiting times, establish 250 new Neighbourhood Health Centres, and deliver millions more appointments than at the start of the current parliament.
On the fiscal side, the plan focuses on lowering national debt and borrowing, aiming to shift spending from interest payments toward vital investment in infrastructure, public services, and social support.
Long-term economic growth is also a key priority. The government plans to invest over £120 billion during this Parliament in transport, housing, energy, research and development, and a modern industrial strategy to improve productivity across the UK.
For devolved nations, including Wales, the Budget seeks to promote fairness and strengthen local economies. Funding includes support for industrial projects, new energy infrastructure, and community-focused initiatives intended to spread economic benefits beyond London and the South East.
Reactions to the plan have been mixed. Some experts warn that tax rises and spending cuts planned through 2029–30 could slow growth and strain households and small businesses. Supporters argue the plan balances fiscal responsibility with investment in essential services and infrastructure, providing both immediate relief and long-term stability.
As these measures roll out, households, businesses, and public services will be closely watching, hoping that the combination of short-term support and long-term investment delivers meaningful change, particularly for those feeling the squeeze of inflation and economic uncertainty.
