How a Small Stratford Cafe Is Growing Through Community-Led Events

A unique local business in Stratford is transforming from a quirky coffee stop into a thriving community hub, as organisers expand its event offering and host activities aimed at bringing people together.

Dialogue Express Café, located inside a repurposed vintage train carriage on the Carpenters Estate, has been turning heads since its launch. The café, run by Dialogue Hub, a Newham social enterprise, is staffed by baristas who are deaf or hard of hearing—creating an inclusive environment where customers are encouraged to order using British Sign Language (BSL).

While serving coffee and light food remains at the heart of the operation, Dialogue Express has recently announced that it is developing a calendar of community-focused events. Alongside regular café service, the venue will now host a range of activities designed to appeal to families, young people, and local residents alike.

“These events are about more than gatherings—they’re about connection and learning,” says founder Hakan Elbir, underlining the café’s mission to break down social barriers and spotlight skills and culture within and beyond the deaf community.

Workshops and classes are among the new features on offer, including sessions where attendees can learn BSL in a relaxed setting and deepen their understanding of non-verbal communication. The space is also being made available for local organisations and small businesses to hire for private events, adding another dimension to its role as a community anchor.

Other planned events expected to feature in the expanded schedule include movie nights, DJ sessions, yoga classes and more, helping the café evolve into a versatile venue that reflects the interests of Stratford’s diverse population.

Situated just minutes from Stratford station, the café’s location within the wider regeneration plans for the Carpenters Estate has positioned it to become a social focal point for local residents and visitors alike.
