New independent businesses open across East London as local economy evolves

East London’s small business scene is continuing to expand with a mix of independent retail, food and hospitality openings that reflect broader post-pandemic revitalisation of neighbourhood high streets and under-used commercial spaces.
In Wapping, Starry Mart has launched its first East London location at London Dock. The 2,800 sq ft store, part of the retailer’s UK expansion, offers a wide range of Asian groceries, fresh produce, snacks and lifestyle products, including tableware, stationery and wellness goods. Originating as an online specialised food retailer, Starry Mart chose the dockside neighbourhood for its diverse community and strong residential footfall.
In Bethnal Green, Tiella has emerged as a standout new restaurant on the neighbourhood’s culinary map. Serving regional Italian dishes from a converted pub space, it has already drawn positive attention from local food editors and diners as one of the city’s notable recent openings.
Elsewhere in East London, Mile End’s Ragged School Museum has become a new site for Forno’s expansion. The Italian bakery, known for its focaccia, pastries and all-day brunch offerings, is opening two new venues on the museum campus — a sit-down café and a separate takeaway counter — bringing artisanal bakery culture to a historical canalside setting.
In Leyton, the railway arches around Tilbury Road continue to evolve into a vibrant hub for independents. Once industrial relics, the arches now host a growing mix of creative businesses including gelaterias, craft taprooms, Caribbean-inspired BYOB restaurants and community cafés, reflecting sustained entrepreneurial interest in repurposed urban spaces.
These openings illustrate how East London remains fertile ground for small business growth, blending retail, food and community-oriented ventures that help diversify local economies. While challenges persist for SMEs across London, including rising costs and location-specific pressures, neighbourhoods in the East End continue to attract both established independent brands and emerging operators.
