Family Business The Puppet Company Wins Regional Small Business Growth Award

The award highlights businesses that demonstrate strong growth while maintaining the culture and principles that define family run enterprises. Judges focused on how family values have contributed to long term success, innovation and resilience.
The Puppet Company was founded by former teachers Sue and Peter Lockey and has evolved from a small creative venture into a globally recognised brand supplying puppets and soft toys to customers around the world. Following Peter’s death in 2021, the business has continued under the leadership of Sue and their children, with the family remaining closely involved in its future direction.
Speaking after the win, co founder Sue Lockey said the recognition was particularly meaningful because the company has always been built around family. She said the business was created to bring joy and creativity to children and families, values that continue to guide the company more than two decades later.
The company has become known not only for its puppets but also for its emphasis on sustainability, accessible play and long term partnerships with independent retailers. Its recent eco ranges made from recycled materials have helped strengthen its position in international markets while responding to growing consumer demand for environmentally conscious products.
The regional success now places The Puppet Company on the shortlist for the national final, which will take place in London in June.
